A Toronto woman was shocked enough to alert the local media a few weeks ago when her daughter discovered that a tag on her new sofa described its color as “nigger brown.” The blame game traveled from the Canadian furniture store all the way to China, where the sofa was produced. The problem lay in the Chinese-English translation software used to print out the tags. When you put the Chinese equivalent of “dark brown” into the older translation software, the computer spits out “nigger.” The company has since updated it’s software. None of this is a comfort to the woman, whose friends from out of town wouldn’t even sit on the sofa. I say, don’t blame a piece of furniture for a computer’s ignorance. Huh?
