I would have killed to have seen Al Sharpton and Bill O’Reilly dining together at Sylvia’s Restaurant in Harlem recently. I could have done without O’Reilly’s on-air description of his shocking restaurant experience.
Bill O’Reilly reported that he “had a great time, and all the people up there are tremendously respectful,” adding: “I couldn’t get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia’s restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it’s run by blacks, primarily black patronship.”
Later, during a discussion with National Public Radio senior correspondent and Fox News contributor Juan Williams about the effect of rap on culture, O’Reilly asserted: “There wasn’t one person in Sylvia’s who was screaming, ‘M-Fer, I want more iced tea.’ You know, I mean, everybody was — it was like going into an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb in the sense of people were sitting there, and they were ordering and having fun. And there wasn’t any kind of craziness at all.”
Wow! A black restaurant with no blatant profanity or crazed rappers threatening to bite O’Reilly’s nose off? Bill O’Reilly learned an important lesson that day with Al Sharpton — black people sometimes (but only if they haven’t been listening to hip hop that day) act just as nicely as they do at Italian restaurants in all-white suburbs! Who knew?

STOP LYIN!
he did not say this?!! can he please crawl back into the aryan coose that spawn him?
That is HORRIBLE!!
That is the most racist, bigoted ish I’ve ever heard. He needs to crawl into a hole and die.
“I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it’s run by blacks, primarily black patronship”
Sooo, you’re saying that b/c a business is black owned that it would have to be chaotic and ghetto, Bill??
Reading the entire transcript of the exchange is much more disturbing. It’s obvious the Bill O’Reilly has never been around blacks his entire life and that he has let the selected lyrics of certain rappers define black people to him.
Bill, Bill, Bill! Are you serious? Bill O’Reilly is another one that needs to go take a nap. Like the person above said, he clearly has not been around black folk…at all. I mean, does he really base his opinions of black people off of rap videos in heavy rotation on MTV? So, I guess he thinks Obama isn’t actually a nice family man and in fact does drive-bys on his way home from the dice game on the corner in front of the liquor sto’.
The scariest thing is that this man’s ratings have continued to climb. That there are people out there supporting - and agreeing with - this blatant racist. I mean, he’s not even subtle about his ignorance.
**In my best tom cruise voice** “Bill, you’re glib.”…….im just sad that he actually has a show that reaches millions of people and even more saddened at the fact that he said this and probably sees nothing wrong with it. *sigh* every single time i hear another ignorant quote come from this man i either put in cam’ron, nas , or luda…lets just say ive been listening to a lot of rap lately..still havent called any1 a hoe or nig*** and i havent purchased a gun…guess ole Bill will be surprised by that also
I second every comment.
THIS is why I get so heated when CLUELESS people talk like they have no brains or observatory skills, “…But THAT was the past, I mean, like, it’s not like that anymore. Black people need to just get OVER it!!!
As 6 yappay said,
Do they not realize that the reason why this man is still on the air is that he actually has an audience- a BIG one.
I wonder if he was sitting near the door, just in case he needed to make a quick getaway in case there was a holdup. He needs to be placed on another planet. Is he surprised that blacks can run a business? He relishes in his ignorance and bigotry. He wants it proven over and over again, and I seriously doubt he will change.
I’m only mad that I didn’t know they were going to be there. I live around the corner from Sylvia’s and I would LOVED to have been a witness to his (obvious) first time in the company of Black people. I bet one of his bodyguards (because you know he had mad security with him in case the natives got restless) had to stop him from touching womens’ hair and asking anyone would looked in his direction questions about their ability to tan. What an ignoramus!
I think this was a very calculated statement on Bill’s behalf. He’s not naive and he’s not stupid. He knew exactly what types of feeling his description would conjure up in his audience. More than making the restaurant seem like a normal place to eat, his depiction in a way validated the black stereotypes that his audiences hold. Which is what he wanted to do.
LOL@ shay w and the Tom C. quote.
So if Bill is oviously racist yet he has a large audience that keeps on growing then that means that people agree with his racist views.
We need to stop letting rap and other negative stuff represent the way black people in this country are viewed. I’m sure it’s not just white people who think this way.
BMD, I co-sign 100%. He’s not stupid. He knows what he’s doing.
Wait. Bill O’Reilly was the waiter?
Daria, thanks for that, I’m gonna chuckle myself of to sleep. Gah, that’s make one hell of a reality TV show.
Funny, the last time I was in Sylvia’s, it was filled with mostly white people. Tourists, of course.
A friend of mine forwarded me this dishonest article/blog so I felt like responding.
I actually listened to this show last week and it was Juan Williams and O’Reilly talking about how the media only puts negative imagery of black people on tv. The point of the segment was to say “all black people are not like Twista, even though that’s what you see all the time”.
O’Reilly has been to more Motown artist concerts than my mother has.
How we took an interview that was about how black Americans were not all thugs despite what the media portrays into “O’Reilly is a racist” is beyond me.
Dishonest? The only dishonest person here is you if you a. think O’Reilly has really been to a bunch of Motown concerts and b. isn’t a bigot. I mean, do you even watch his program? Have you heard some of his statements and beliefs???
Get real.
And, yes, I listened to the entire interview and my opinion of it has not changed. The fact that he was speaking to Juan Williams means nothing. O’Reilly has come out today saying he was “misunderstood” when we all know he wasn’t. He said what he really felt and it backfired.
And let me add…I think there’s some racism in the fact that he is equating Anita Baker’s band wearing tuxes to “good” black culture. We are more than music! Who cares how many Motown concerts he’s been to anyway?? How about how many books he’s read by black authors?
Well, O’Reilly has been to a bunch of concerts by Motown artists and other black artists because I actually LISTEN TO HIS SHOW every few days and he brings it up ALL THE TIME.
O’Reilly isn’t against black people, he’s against parts of the hip hop culture that he finds distasteful, and I can’t say I totally disagree.
What he said was misunderstood because it wasn’t about him going “hey, I went to this black restaurant and surprise, no one yelled out MF’er”, he was telling how a lot of white America doesn’t see real black America and the perception - from television and music - is that most black people act like gangsta rappers (if that even exists anymore).
But hey, you’ll believe what you want to about him.
BTW, my friend who sent me this did research on this site btw and found out its sourced by Media Matters (after three other layers) - they hate O’Reilly and vice versa. Hmm, but hey, at least he didn’t say Obama was “clean”
I’m sure that whites and blacks alike are eternally grateful that Bill O’Reilly cleared up the misconception that blacks can dine at a restaurant without yelling, “M-fer, give me an iced tea!” And that they can wear tuxes on stage with Anita Baker. Seriously, where would we be without his astute racial observations? He insulted whites as much as blacks with his idiotic statements.
I’m not really sure how much research was necessary on your friend’s part to figure out I spotted this story on Media Matters — I link to them directly at the bottom of this post, as did most other blogs that carried this story. It’s obvious that the people at Media Matters don’t like Bill O’Reilly, but they didn’t put words in his mouth either.
