When I look at American Idol-winner Jordin Sparks, I see a cute teenager. When MeMe Roth of the National Action On Obesity looks at her, she sees diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol. Nice.

On Fox News, Roth implied that Sparks shouldn’t win the show because she would be a bad influence on American children. Because of her weight. Come on! American Idol has had a few contestants through the years that were fat to the point of being unhealthy, and Jordin Sparks is not even close to being one of them. And she’s a child! She will have enough pressure to slim down in the coming months from her handlers and agents and record label without a so-called child obesity activist calling her fat and basically telling her she’s going to die on cable television. I’m not labeling Roth a racist or a sexist, but I find her comments similar to the ones Don Imus made about the Rutgers girls. This is a teenager who just accomplished something amazing, and here comes Roth to knock her down over a percieved physical flaw. It’s sick, and it’s mean. And if Roth was really interested in fighting obesity, she would not be wasting her time on a girl like Jordin Sparks.

Maybe she should pick on somebody her own size.

This is so incredibly offensive. Let the girl have her moment. DAMN! And she’s gorgeous.

The picture of un-health?? Give me a break! She’s not stick thin, but to try and hail her as the poster child for heart disease is an absolute slap in the face!

Unbelieveable. I guess they should have picked someone that has an eating disorder because they’d be such a better example…

I am tired of all these people labeling these fine black women as “fat” or “big.” I don’t see anything at all wrong with these women. Like shwamy said, the models on tv are so much better. Rather have a healthy child than an undernourished one.

ive: we do need to address our health though. Sometimes we ARE “fat” and “big” and we are dying and living less long because of our blase attitude toward weight. Being thick and beautiful is part of our culture, but unfortunately, so is being overweight. Healthy doesn’t equal thick, but to so many of us it does. It is killing us in the form of diabetes and heart disease and in the fact that we drop dead so much earlier than other races.

I don’t disagree with you, but I don’t think that the women the media portrays as big or thick are just that. We have a serious health problem in the black community that needs to be addressed, but I don’t think attacking women they are just a lil overweight is the way to do it. I really think that it should have been gone about a different way and using a diff subject, someone like the character Eddie Murphy portrayed in Norbit. It’s a fact that our diet is deplorable, and not enough of us exercise. Oh, and don’t forget to add high blood pressure to the list of things that ail us.

True, true. Well, honestly, I think they went after her b/c she is bi-racial and they used the weight thing as a cover-up. It is FOX afterall, you know.

This really disturbs me. Unless you have a copy of Jordin’s health records or she is visibly suffering because of her weight you have no proof. Not to mention that it’s not her place and none of her business. She should be worried about the women who are suffering from eating disorders and their organs will eventually shut down all because they felt they weren’t skinny enough. Ugh… I am sooo disgusted seriously.

I definitely don’t agree with making comments like that, especially about a child. As I said in the previous AI post, she will be down to about 100 lbs by the end of the year.

Why? Well, mere mortals, intelligent adult women who are not performing on stage feel staggering pressure to be supermodel thin. How do you think a child of this age would handle it?

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn’t want to be her weight but I’m not saying my attitudes about bodies are healthy. I guess because Simon Cowell dogged Kelly Clarkson constantly about her weight, news stations didn’t feel a need to trash her too, though her waist line is on constant inspection on websites such as theskinnywebsite.com

ALTHOUGH I TAKE GREAT OFFENSE AT WHAT WAS SAID ABOUT JORDIN BEING FAT, I BELIEVE IT WAS AIMED AT ALL FEMALES, BE THEY BLACK, BLUE, OR PURPLE! A STICK THIN WOMAN/GIRL IS JUST AS UNHEALTHY AS ONE WHO IS SUPPOSEDLY “OVERWEIGHT”!

Jordin is overweight/obese? The camera adds about 10 lbs so she’s actually even smaller than we think. That chick is on crack. Not everyone is 120 lbs.

No. 13 Jordin Sparks Doesn’t Care What Mean, Anti-Obesity Experts Say About Her / Stereohyped says:

[…] Evil media whores from on Fox News be damned, American Idol’s Jordin Sparks says she’s finally comfortable with her body. We all know that’s probably a lie. After nailing her Idol audition, Jordin’s confidence began to soar. For the first time in her life, she embraced her right to bare arms. Before the show, “I liked to wear sleeves because they would cover up my arms,” she says. When the show’s stylists made suggestions, “I’d go, ‘This dress is way too beautiful. If I add sleeves it will ruin it.’ So I just got over it.” […]
