Dog the Bounty Hunter needs to look no further than his own family to find out who dogged (get it?!?) him out by slipping the National Enquirer a career-damaging tape filled with racial slurs. That’s right, it was his nigger-loving son. What can I say? Once you go black, you never go back. But the money was probably good, too. []

One Step Closer?

• The FDA just approved a new HIV drug that attacks the virus in a different way — great news for patients who have developed a resistance to current HIV drugs.

• Calling Supreme Court justices — women are just as likely to get abortions when it’s illegal as they are when it’s not.

• Breast cancer treatment differs between black and white women. No way!

• Prostate cancer is more likely to return in blacks than in whites.

• First borns have higher IQs? As a last born, i recent the implications.

When I hear the term “Family Values,” I think of the Christian Right and Rev. Jerry Falwell, and I get all squirmy and want to run in the opposite direction. But Tyler Perry (seen here at yesterday’s Why Did I Get Married? premiere) recently announced that he wants to launch his own network geared toward promoting family values. Thankfully, that probably doesn’t include gay bashing and anti-abortion speeches. Plus, rumor has it T.P. is the last guy with any business spouting anti-gay invectives. If you catch my drift.

Perry says, “Our children and our families are falling apart because there’s only one thing to see, there’s only one place you can go for information, especially African-American people, and a lot of times it’s very negative.

“There are a lot of horrible things going on when you turn on the television with sex and violence and everybody has become desensitized to it. I want to own a television cable network that will be all positive when you turn it on in the morning, it will inspire your children if they’re watching cartoons or the prime time.”

This sounds like a good idea for kids, even if it turns into a self-indulgent Madea-fest. It will definitely be better than what the kids are watching in the mornings now.

What are the kids watching in the mornings? I’m out of touch.

It Doesn't Matter, 'Cause You're Gonna Get It

Who’s the latest fading star to allow television cameras to invade their family’s privacy in the name of money and fame? Snoop and co. just announced he’ll have an reality show on E! before the year is out. Something tells me this won’t be much like Run’s House.

The as yet untitled half-hour show, slated for a late 2007 debut, will follow Snoop, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, and his family as the Doggfather goes about his daily business, which has expanded over the past decade to include producing, acting, hosting a radio show, helming a youth football league and tacking -izzle onto the end of every other word.

On the home front, Snoop and his wife of 10 years, Shante, have two sons and a daughter.

I can just imagine the Cosby Show-esque family scenes now, like Mr. Broadus explaining to his daughter that, although he “don’t love dem hoes,” she will always have a special place in his heart. Or when he lectures his oldest son about drinking as they share a blunt in his Escalade. This will be a must see.

African American Fathers Are A Dying Breed

eddie.jpg
If you were wondering why I was so annoyed at Black America Web’s Baby Daddy Poll, it’s because of stats that show African American fathers are a dying breed. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that a culture that celebrates the “baby daddy” instead of the husband, or even boyfriend, has a little bit to do with that.

In 2004, more than half of black children lived in single-parent homes. A recent UT Austin study found that among fathers who were not married to their children’s mother, the biggest obstacle to being a good parent involved interpersonal issues with the mother. But I thought it was fun to be/have a baby daddy!

Michelle Obama Breaks It Down On GMA

obamafam.jpg
Michelle Obama on the media’s distorted portrayal of black Americans:

As we’ve all said in the black community, we don’t see all of who we are in, in the media. We see snippets… of our community and distortions of our community,” she said. “So the world has this perspective that somehow Barack and Michelle Obama are different, that we’re unique. And we’re not. You just haven’t seen us before.”

On how war is strain on family values:

“All of our emotional and financial resources… as a country have been totally put into the war. We haven’t talked about the domestic issue in about 10 years,” she said. “There are no serious conversations about health care or education, or child care, or minimum wage. I mean, these are the basic issues that eat away at the family structure. So you can’t just tell, you know, a family of four to suck it up and make it work.”

On her marriage:

“I don’t want to paint some unrealistic picture of who we are so that in the end, when it falls apart and if we haven’t lived up to this unrealistic expectation, people feel let down in some way,” Obama told anchor Robin Roberts. “This is who we are. I’ve got a loud mouth. I tease my husband. He is incredibly smart, and he is very able to deal with a strong woman, which is one of the reasons why he can be president, because he can deal with me.”
