Once a role model for little black girls everywhere, Marion Jones is now bankrupt and finally ready to admit that she took steroids before the 2000 Olympics.
The plea comes after years of angry denials by Jones, 31, who in 2000 won five medals in Sydney – three gold and two bronze track and field medals – and was the most celebrated female athlete of the games.
Jones is expected to be stripped of her medals in light of the revelations. Under the statute of limitations, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and other sports organizations have eight years to withdraw medals and nullify results.
She stands to spend up to 6 months in jail and will probably receive a lengthy suspension from the competition world. But, hey! Unlike some baseball players I know (of), at least she eventually told the truth.

Isn’t everyone who runs that fast on something?
So sad. I really was on her side until now because I wanted the allegations to be false.
T&F is full of doping. It’s just one of those sports unfortunately. It starts in college. A lot of my homegirls from high school ran track and a few made it to high levels. Growth hormones are common place I think.
It also depends on the climate you’re in. Track is huge in SoCal so there’s more of that, but up here in NorCal - not so much. My boy used to run track in high school and college and was his high school’s girls track coach when he began teaching. He says he didn’t see a lot of that kind of stuff until he started running in big meets in SoCal where it’s a lot more competitive.
Well, if they throw her in jail, she can handle herself.
She may have admitted to doping, but I don’t think they should strip her of her medals. After all, she still had to put in phenomenal amounts of effort to achieve that medal…

This is why I’m not interested in sports and why I don’t think parents should EVER put sports ahead of school work and a backup career. I think many of them are on steroids. They sacrifice school basics to become a sports star (or a rapper) but when their careers are over they have nothing to fall back on. The presence of steroids have just tainted all sports in my opinion. People need to do something to make the world a better place instead of focusing on games, winning, and being famous. This is really a shame but I think they caught this athlete but there are many more guilty ones who just haven’t been caught yet.
She should be stripped of her medals. It’s cheating. End of story.
I feel mostly sorry for anyone who was legit who competed against her and got 2nd or 3rd place. I’m sure they are all pissed!!
Almost all athletes in US T&F, basketball, baseball, and Football are cheats.
It’s amazing how Barry Bond got away with it…and everyone (most with very low self-esteems) think of these Zeros as Heroes.
I bet, if there’s a fair way to check these cheats unannounced and at anytime with an independent commission, you’d see that most of them will flunk the drug test.
I would also like to draw attention to one other cheat who no one talks about it anymore: Florence Griffith Joyner. She died of a massive heart attack at such a young age. No, she wasn’t competing when she died; she was sound asleep. Drugs would do that to you.
For Jones, strip her medals and throw her in jail for perjury. She’s no more special than an ordinary folk on the street…when it comes to law!
Re Flojo she could have had a heart problem - and I think that’s what they deemed it. Some man dropped dead in Chicago while running b/c he had a previous heart condition. Those things can strike at any time so I’m not quick to accuse her of something unfounded.
I disagree that most athletes are cheats. There are many high school and collegiate athletes who play by the rules. Professional players of any sport only represent a small percentage of Americans who play the game. And what do you mean by cheating? Roids? Gambling? How are most basketball and baseball players cheats?
Hundreds were also hospitalized in Chicago btw. It was 88 degrees and humid, no condition for running. The heat was probably responsible for that death. Runners are prone to heart issues, including recreational runners. They are more likely to have heart attacks than overweight people and I don’t think many dope. To be real though, pro athletes do dope and I wouldn’t think FloJo is an exception. She was abnormally ripped in my opinion which doesn’t make her guilty, bur still….
I’m not saying that some don’t use enhancers, but it’s not almost all. And there are professional athletes of all stripes. There are professional water polo players, volleyball players, swimmers, softball players, surfers, etc. To say the most pro athletes cheat is a broad generalization based on knowledge of a few high profile cases. People familiar with professional athletics would totally disagree. There are sports like track where doping is more prevalent than others, but again it goes back to your knowledge of sports.
marion has robbed my fellow jamaicans of medals and has denied doing this for so many years.
i really admired marion and staunchly defended her only to be disappointed the amount of sacrifice that we as young girls make to america for a better life, at times we have to abandon our dreams of becoming a track star because of cheats. flo jo was a beautiful feminine girl and in no time she became unusually ripped no one can convince me that she was not on steriods oh please….
Pretty unusually ripped in my opinion, more so than Marion:

Doesn’t matter. There’s no way to prove or disprove this now though.
The body can get very, very muscular naturally so I don’t think that’s a qualifier for being on roids. Also genetics plays a huge role in it.
