The contracts have been signed, and Don Imus will officially return to the airwaves December 3. The exact numbers weren’t disclosed, but it’s an 8-figure, multi-year contract with WABC. Must be nice. But don’t worry, NABJ. He’s on a 40-second delay. So the next time he says something awful, only people in the studio will hear it.

Ya know…whats funny about this, is the fact that he still commands such a faithful audience. This goes beyond Imus. This is a reflection about people all together. The kind of people who would give him another public forum to speak at, despite his comments, the last time he had public air time. It also says something about his listeners. And regardless of accepting or not accepting Imus’ apology, it doesn’t change the fact that he was wrong to say it. But lately, I get the feeling that white people are tired of makin’ nice wit us. Between the Duke case, all of these nooses, the Jena Six and the contradiction with Aloysius Staton Jr. (I don’t know why that hasn’t been called out more)…it just seems that white folk just don’t care anymore. If they are lettin’ this racist back on the air…I just don’t know anymore.

I understand what he said was wrong and should have said off air if thats how he felt. He is a shock jock, its what he does. Thats not the only negative comment he has ever said. Why should he have been fired becuase of those words? There is a freedom of speechlaw, and we arent the only community he has offended. Has anyone ever listened to Jamie Foxxs’ radio show on Sirius? He offends everyone. Whats the difference.

Well for starters, we don’t actually have free speech. You can’t yell fire in a crowded theatre (national law). You can’t threaten to kill somebody. And if you make any kinds of threats about the president, you’ll have the Feds on you faster than you can say Wako Texas. There are numerous circumstances in regards to just how limited our “free” speech is. I mean, you listen to the radio and watch television right? Do you here people saying “fuck” on public television and public radio stations? Anyways, the problem, is, it was racist banter, no matter which way you cut it. If NBC got sued for Janet Jackson’s superbowl half-time nip slip, Imus should easily be a target for something far more serious. Hate speech (even his joking brand of it) promotes further ignorance.

Hate speech promotes more than ignorance. It validates and promotes more hatred.

So the word nappy is a racial slur? Imus aside, before he said that, most of the Rutgers girls basketball team hair was looking rough. I support Rutgers sports being alumni and watched most of their games that season, and he was not lying. Hoe thats another story, but nappy headed, well they were. They straightened their hair before their conference about the comment.

“Nappy” is not a racial slur, but you can use it in a very derogatory way. You know that. Just like the word nigga.

Which is exactly why my initial comment, stated that this is a very revealing truth for the people he now works for and the people who would still listen to Imus at this point. In a heated moment, people may say regretful things, in a reactionary fashion (Kramer…who was also very wrong), but Imus was unprovoked. He meant exactly what he said when he called them “Nappy headed hoes.” Imus is a grown ass man. The nigga knows the seriousness of those words. He is old enough to have been around during the Civil Rights era. He knows what’s up.

But like I said, if they find him to be profitable enough to put on air, that must mean there are enough people who agree with Imus and his rhetoric, or they just don’t care. Either way, it’s clear that his speech and others like him, just drive the current situation where animosity between whites and Blacks is becoming a very wide spread incidence. Within the span of a year and a half, we’ve had several massive hate crimes break out. I remember when it was a shock to see things like Rodney King. Now, it is so common place (Megan Williams, Jena Six, Aloysisus Staton Jr., Sean Bell etc) in the media, that the nation as a whole is apathetic (even in our own community). I can’t support letting a man like Imus on the radio, when the nation is at such a racially volatile crux. Free speech or no free speech…putting him on air will be disasterous. Mark my words. When the first protest comes about him getting an 8 figure (tens of millions of dollars) contract and a new show, all hell will break loose. Shits about to get real racial. Don’t get caught sleepin’ folks. We need to start promotin’ unity. And that won’t happen with a nigga like Imus, on the air.
