Quote of the Week

Mario on feeling like he’s enabling his heroin-addicted mom, Shawn:

“By doing this type of thing, I feel like I’m saying to her, ‘It’s OK, what you’re doing is OK,’ ” the Baltimore native explains in a scene in which he takes Shawn shopping. “In the back of my mind, it would feel better if I knew I was doing this for my mother [when she were] well. I felt like after I left [the store], maybe I should have said, ‘No. Until you get better, I’m not doing anything for you.’ But sometimes it’s hard to face reality.”

I’ve never heard of a black person doing heroin. The only people I know who did it were the kids who ODed in the gated community in my town.

P.S.: gated communities are the best places to score high quality, potent drugs. Though this fact is highly inappropriate considering the topic…

What do you think ppl did before crack?

I don’t know. I think I was born after crack became popular. My impression has always been that heroin is expensive.

Plus the American portion of my upbringing was near Baltimore and D.C. Crack use is high.

I obviously have not done non-prescription drugs. My sense of the hierarchy:
Crystal meth - the just-say-no Requiem for a Dream double dildo one
Cocaine - expensive, for models and i-bankers mostly
Heroin - rich kids, 90s models
Weed - every man’s drug, makes you fat
Crack - the budget drug, very addictive

All of that is completely wrong.

Okay then. I don’t need to know really until I have kids and they get to that After School Special stage of development. I’ll just rent Requiem and voila! Parenting duties done.

I know that i-baners use cocaine though and I assume it’s expensive.

Am I the only one who /really/ wants a Powerpoint demonstration of this?? Make it happen daria!

(P.S. There’s a great article about the change in the cocaine industry in the July/August issue of Atlantic. And for heroin education, um, watch The Wire.)

I still have nightmares about that movie and the old guy chanting ‘Ass to ass’. I still can’t look at Jennifer Connoly without thinking of that movie.
