When I think of Naomi Campbell, I don’t exactly think black activist. But it is nice to know that even she can speak out against the treatment of black models (herself and a select few excluded) in the fashion world.
The beauty says, “Black models are being sidelined by the major modeling agencies. It is a pity that people don’t appreciate black beauty. Even myself, I get a raw deal from my own country in England. For example, I hardly come on the front pages of the London Vogue magazine. Only white models, some of whom are not as prominent as I am, are put on splash pages.”
“I don’t want to quit modeling until I find that black models get equal prominence and recognition by the world media and information instruments.” Campbell first appeared on the front cover of Vogue when she was a teenager in 1987 and last appeared five years ago.
How generous of her! On second thought, she might just be mad that she hasn’t been on the cover in 5 years and has secretly vowed not to quit until they ask her back.

**UPDATE: Now she’s in Kenya scouting for African models. She really does care!
Maybe.
Might also have to do with the fact that she is old by modeling standards. And ppl have been there and done that with her. Are other models circa ‘87 who are STILL in the biz getting covers? I don’t know?
Lauren that last paragraph is spot on. Naomi cares about Naomi not about black models. She doesn’t give a damn about the fates of other models’ careers. Look at how nasty she was to Tyra when she first came out. (Sure Tyra has proved to be very annoying in hindsight but at the time she was just another black model trying to make it on the scene).
Anna Wintour isn’t editor of London Vogue. She might have been with them back in the day (I’m fairly sure she was actually), but there’s a new Devil in charge there.
Black models under 30 that are household names to US fashion magazine readers: Chanel Iman, Liya Kebede and Alek Wek. I guess to be fair, there aren’t that many models that are household names nowadays really and even those ones aren’t very attractive. I miss the 90s models. I don’t care what anyone else thinks. Gisele Bundchen looks like an anorexic tranny with nice hair. Very Jennifer Aniston and that is not cute.
Naomi Campbell and George Bush don’t care about black people!!!
(Also, I’m fairly certain Lauren knows which Vogue Anna Wintour edits.)

I would argue that they may not even be household names. I bet ppl recognize their faces, but…
During the time in question (when Naomi was featured on British Vogue), Anna Wintour might have been editor but she no longer is, so she’s not biting the hand that fed her per se. Since Naomi is also tight with Andre Leon Talley, I doubt she would make any negative inferences about Anna or US Vogue. She might be on coke, but she’s no dummy.
Naomi is still one of the fiercest models ever, but she needs to pass the baton. She needs her own fashion or modelling show like Tyra or Heidi.

~Chanel Iman, Liya Kebde, and Alek Wek are all gorgeous in their own right. Who are you to judge or rate the beauty of others?
downbrown, the not gorgeous thing was in reference to Gisele and em (Natalia, etc.). I’m just not impressed by most models these days. I agree that Liya and Alek are absolutely gorgeous. Chanel Iman’s collarbones are certified weapons. I don’t find skin and bones (very literal in her case) cute, pretty, gorgeous or sexy.
