Despite all of her accomplishments, Halle Berry says she still has to fight for studios to see past the color of her skin.
Berry says race continues to be an enduring problem in the industry, claiming she has to work extra-hard to secure a leading role.
She says, “It doesn’t matter that I have an Oscar, an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Silver Bear.
“I shouldn’t have had to try so hard to be considered. I should have to stop convincing studios I am right for it - it should be on my acting merit.”
But it’s a Catch-22, isn’t it? Because studios don’t show her love, she has to make movies like Catwoman and Perfect Stranger. And because she makes movies like Catwoman and Perfect Stranger studios will never show her love. And Halle Berry has it pretty good as far as black actresses go.

Or….maybe she just isnt that good of an actress.
THANK YOU! She really isn’t that great of an actress. She’s decent, but decent doesn’t always cut it. Let’s get real. Sorry, folks.
I think actors whine too much. Just because she has those awards it doesn’t prove anything. Halle has been given chances other actresses haven’t and not always delivered for the studios where it really counts (ie. money).
Quit your whining Halle. Gothika, Perfect Strangers and Catwoman weren’t exactly box-office gold nor did they feature particularly strong performances. Yet you are still offered high-paying roles.
Your are an actor that works consistently and is celebrated for that work. That is the most any actor can as for. I love you Ms. Berry but sometime you need to see further beyond the end of your own nose.
No more italics?
I agree with Lauren completely. When people say things like this though, they are labeled cry babies which is why Jodie Foster can sit there talking about how there are indeed good roles for mature actresses. Odd parallel but I found Hillary’s statement about how gender doesn’t matter in the election race laughable. B—- please! Romney’s religion matters to voters. Obama’s blackness matters. Hillary’s vagina matters. I don’t see people telling Fred Thompson, Giuliani or Romney that they need a brow lift and work done, or that they need to change outfits. Ah tangents…
She’s a good actress when she gets good roles. I think it’s fairly obvious when her heart’s into something and when she’s doing a project for fun. Catwoman was probably hella fun and they basically paid for her food and trainer. Plus she got an even better body than she had before.
That didn’t work. *sorry*
I saw Halle on Oprah for her new movie. She was commenting on how they really didnt even want her to read for the part because they already gave David Ducovney(??) the role of her dead husband and they were so confused about what the kids would look like in the movie. It wasnt really about her acting for them it was if an interracial
couple would be believable and what audience would see the movie.
But I agree it is a lot harder for pretty much every other Black actress.
It is a freelance industry and if you’re looking for studios to be behind you, you have to consistently make money. She is rich enough to make small films that are meaningful to her, she doesn’t have to kow-to to anyone. Wasn’t the film she won the Oscar for, independently funded, as have been some of her best roles, (Dorothy Dandridge, Their Eyes Were Watching God). But if you want to play by Hollywood’s rules, then expect to be judged by Hollywood’s standards.
Daria - either you’re a good actress or not. Do you think anyone has eve said “She’s a good actress when she gets good roles.” about Meryl Streep??? No. B/c homegirl can act. Hands down. No question. There are questions about Halle’s talents b/c her talents are questionable.
I think I’d prefer Benicio as dead hubby and David as friend of dead husband.
Unless you’ve got all the kids cast and set to film, I don’t understand why this would be a problem considering that she’s a high profile actress. I have little interest in seeing the movie BUT I would probably have zero interest in seeing it if Halle wasn’t in it. I like her as an actress as I haven’t seen any of her bad movies. I listen to Roger Ebert.
Yes BMD. Go rent Prairie Home Companion. Meryl Streep is probably THE most talented actresses. She’s so talented that she can wear house dresses to the Oscars and it’s okay. Meryl Streep gets great roles most of the time because her agent is great. Also, Ms. Streep has never been afraid of being out of work at any point in her career while Halle and most actors will take less than stellar roles so they can have work.
Diane Keaton and Susan Sarandon are also very good actresses but both have had their fair share of TERRIBLE movies and their acting was crap.
Acting is an overrated profession in my opinion. Anyone can do it. Theres acting that I will feel becuase the subject matter hits home to me more then the next person. Its all subjective.
I have to disagree. I’ve worked with a thousand actors that were horrible. I mean, 20 and 30 take horrible. Being a true thespian is a gift.
Of course, Im not saying there are not any. Denzel Washington is one for example. Movie making isnt about that anymore, its about who’s hot. Who is going to make me some quick box office cash. Its odd to run across movie’s like “crash” for example anymore. Look at American Gangster, T.I., why in the hell is he in the movie? Or all this other garbage being put out with the hot joe smoe of the minute.
No, there are good movies made still. But they may be middle-budget movies. Nearly every film I have worked on has been in the 5-10 million range (and many less than that). That’s not a lot for a big budget, but for indy flicks it’s not bad. There are still good films made, but you have to find them. Got to your local art house or indy DVD rental place - there are lots and lots of great movies that ppl who are only familiar with mainstream stuff don’t know about. I am particular to specific genres from certain time periods so I can find a lot of good stuff. If someone is a casual film watcher - then, yea, they’re up shit creek. If they have a slightly more sophisticated film palate then there’s a lot of choice out there.
Well my palate is tasting shitty creek water, cause where I live Blockbuster is that indie film store. Is there any websites or such that rates these indie films becuase I would have no clue where to start
Halle is a good actress when she’s acting in her range. Is she a great actress? No. To me her biggest mistakes have come from chhosing the wrong types of roles. She absolutely deserved her Oscar for Monsters Ball, but she also deserved her Razzie for Catwoman.
Executives, those that greenlight a film, don’t consider Berry to be a great actress. When she’s up for consideration, her hiring is contingent on a kick-ass director who gets the most out of his or her actors, because everyone knows she can’t do it alone. No one in Hollywood really believes she’s a good actress. She got her Oscar for “that” scene. She should know that.
She got an Oscar because she played the role well. She also deserved the Emmy for Dorothy Dandridge. I agree that her range is limited (like most actors btw), but unlike them, she doesn’t consider this.
^^Stan alert!
You know I love, Daria!
I meant to say I love you…as in I’m just fucking around. From one stan to another.
Here we go again, blaim it on the white men. how pathetic!
Oh Halle,
Your acting is not the best. You look wonderful and every now and then you make a movie that doesn’t piss me off.
You really pissed me off when you had that role in Monster’s Ball. You should be complaining about how you, a black woman, were portrayed in that.
What she has actually been getting by on is her pretty face. Halle Berry is not an Oscar worthy actress.
Halle is a limited actress but one who gave an Oscar worthy performance in “Monster’s Ball.” And she did not win just for “that scene”.
Jeez, you would think she was the only actress to show her tits or simulate sex in cinematic history. PLEASE!!!!
I often wonder if Halle wasn’t as attractive and didn’t have as much “Caucasian” in her background would she get as much flack as she gets?
There are only a handful of actors who can consistently rise above the material served up by major studios today. Studios today are owned and ran by multinational corporations whose sole purpose for existence is profit.
Dumbed down scripts, directors more in love with their perceived talents than the film and producers with an eye on the financial rewards of a project rather than the artistic merits is a recipe for mediocrity.
Daria, Streep is a great “technical” actresss but lacks the necessary human connection that would make her simply a “great” actress. When I compare her performances with the performances of someone like Beah Richards, Diana Sands or Geraldine Page the lack of humanity is glaring.
Dinero, acting is an overrated profession but not an easy one. If anyone could do it and do it well we would not have the abundance of awful performances recorded for cinematic prosterity and I would not be working in advertising. LOL
