mugshot.jpgDr. Jan Adams, the unlucky (to say the least) surgeon who performed the breast reduction and tummy tuck that may have caused Donda West’s death, just got unluckier. The Discovery Health Channel decided to stop airing Plastic Surgery the show that Adams hosted for five years.

With talk show appearances and his own show, Adams had been riding the wave of plastic surgery popularity until his bubble very publicly burst early this week. According to a story in the Washington Post a few months ago, plastic surgery is getting more and more popular within the black community, with black plastic surgery patients rising from 16 percent in 2002 to 23 percent in 2004. Blacks are seeking out surgeons who specialize in “ethnic plastic surgery” — meaning they preserve ethnic characteristics when they do facial work and pay special attention to issues such as scarring and keloids during procedures like breast reductions and tummy tucks.

This is possibly why Donda West sought out Adams, a prominent/well-known black surgeon. Who knows? Adams might have performed the surgery by the book, and West might have met the same fate no matter who she had gone to. But as evidence builds against Adams, you’ve got to wonder what would have happened if Adams was a plastic surgeon with a board certification on his resume instead of television credits.

Discovery did the right thing. They could not in good conscience air a show with him at the helm any longer. You’re right, Lauren, Dr. West may have met the same fate with any doctor, but the fact that Adams seems so lacking in qualifications (in my opinion) means he bears a lot of responsibility here.

Dude stalked his ex, had a restraining order from her (she said drinking gave him Jekyll-Hyde qualities), had several DUIs, knocked up a patient while she was drunk and medicated post-surgery, has not paid some malpractice settlements, tended to not handle unsuccessful surgeries ethically, etc. I’m quite sure that all of this would be reason to dismiss him. I like the show because it actually makes plastic surgery serious, instead of something like buying a dress. Dr. 90210 and Extreme Makeover really lead to a lot of misconceptions. Having him on the show would not serve the show well.

He’s also not ASPS certified. Neither is Dr. Rey. If you’re going to have work done, find someone who actually trained in it extensively, not someone who switched over because other areas of medicine weren’t as lucrative as they imagined.

As for specialists in ethnic procedures, what’s important is to find someone who ensures the smallest incisions possible (= small scars) for body procedures. The piece that people are mostly concerned with is the nose. The Jackson kids, Lil Kim and some others have had terrible procedures. On the other hand, Amerie, Patti, Halle, Kelly and Beyonce have had good results. Off the top of my head, I know there’s an Asian surgeon in Texas who is really good with these, Cultura in D.C. is somewhat good at it and Dr. Nassif from Dr. 90210 (he does nose jobs almost exclusively) is also great.

There’s a black female plastic surgeon in Marina del Rey that a couple of my homegirls have gone to that is very good also, Daria. Also - there are black female (they are twins I think) plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills that I’ve heard good things about. Can’t remember their names, but if I find them I’ll let you know.

There’s a husband-wife pair in BH that I thought were brother and sister. They look alike. It might be them. The procedure I’m getting has tiny little incisions. The only additional qualification I need other than the basics are results that look good. Some doctors take too much out. Some take too little. I want it done on the inner and back of thighs as well as inner knee and “flanks,” the not quite love handles but not quite back fat area. It’s also not a very common technique on the East Coast (Liposelection). BH surgeons are really overpriced and as far as expertise on this particular procedure goes, they aren’t the best. It was first started by a Brazilian surgeon and a Colorado surgeon in the early 90s.

The nose is the one thing to be particular about. Dr. Griffin from Extreme Makeover is black but I was NOT a fan of his outcomes. He didn’t give them the Michael Jackson, but it still wasn’t a good job. Black surgeons don’t necessarily have a lot of training with ethnic rhinoplasty.

My issue now is finding a good dermatologist

I had the BEST derma in LA. I have very sensitive skin and in the winter I can get light enough that you can see the veins and broken capillaries in my face (not a good look). I told my derma that I work in the film biz and my face is a marketing tool so I can’t have it looking crazy. He always hooked me up with some cream or wash or something. Fuck. I hate living in SF. Now I don’t even have one.

I need a peel. I needed a peel like 3 months ago. Every possible texture is represented on my face. I use Juice Beauty’s extra strength peel. I look fantastic for about a day and then back to this mess. Hyperpigmentation, itchiness and what not. My nose is so frickin oily yet my cheeks are itchy and dry. It’s a mess. For a town with so many medical professionals, the dermatologists here are INADEQUATE.

No. I don’t get any rashes and it doesn’t seem to be a reaction to products. My skin has gotten more sensitive as I’ve gotten older. I use to wash with Clearasil and then put rubbing alcohol on my face. It was my acne defense plan in my teens though I didn’t really get pimples. If I did that now, my face would be on fire.

“rubbing alcohol on my face”

If I had a client who told me they were abusing their skin that way, I’d smack them upside the head. That’s horrible for your skin. Maybe that’s why you have skin issues now?? Who knows.

I know. The horror. I stopped at 15. All my friends did it. Either witch hazel or rubbing alcohol. I had braces. I really couldn’t afford pizza face on top of it all.

Of all the shows on Discovery Health, I never saw this one. Maybe it’s b/c I’m sick of hearing about Plastic Surgery.

I will say that ‘Mystery Diagnosis’ is the best show ever!!

That show annoys me because you’ll never need to know anything from it. The fact that some rich idiot kid decided to do an adventure race that involved running with exposed skin by the borders of the Amazon River and contracted a worm that had reproduced, causing debilitating itching, is just not something I ever need to know. Even as a reference item. No one in my extended social circle will ever need to know that. Sorry, but that’s the only episode I’ve seen and I could not stop rolling my eyes. Seriously, if you’re having a quarter life crisis and you’ve got crazy money, debauchery is the route to go, not suffering outdoors with beasts of all types.
