I want to like David Banner. I want to like David Banner because, on many levels, he seems like he cares. He’s got a business degree from Southern University, he gives away scholarships in his CDs, he does quite a bit of charity work. But as much as the 34-year-old strives to improve the black community at large, he’s also an apologist for all that is ignorant in the hip hop community. And that I just can’t like. A profile in the December issue of XXL highlights these “warring” sides of his personality. In my opinion, one of them is winning out.
“Peep game: Why wasn’t Congress trying to [ban] the word ‘nigger’ in the ’60s?” Banner grins in an ain’t-that-funny way. “Now that we’re making money out of it, and calling ourselves niggas, they don’t want us to use it… I’ll tell you, ‘hip-hop’ is the new word for ‘nigger.’ When people say, ‘They’re dressing hip-hop,’ they should just say they mean ‘niggers.’”
But what does it mean when you say it, David Banner?
What a self-deluded, self-hating dumbass.
ign’t
I also heard he had a master’s in education from the University of Maryland, but I’m not sure if that’s true or not.
Ok I did some google research, it didn’t say what master’s program he was in at MD, but that when he left to do music full-time he was a semester and a thesis short of his degree and he was in the top five of his class.
So why is he so ign’t?
B/c he’s human. He’s showing the even educated ppl can be misguided.
Of course educated people can be misguided. It’s just that there are so many things wrong with that statement.
this seems to be a generational issue because i don’t know any young person (80’s babies and younger) that claim to be “offended” by the word. If any of you know Michael Eric Dyson you should try picking up one of his books.
Nigga has only become such a problem now that it’s profitable. David Banner gave a great example actually, how come they weren’t tryna ban it back then? Who was benefiting from the word NIGGER back then?? Who’s capitalizing on it now???
Do more research…
And about bitches and ho’s, these are REAL types of women. Ok a rapper is rich for example, so the majority of women flocking to him, most adulterers, are out to get the money or have the rapper’s baby! So when he raps, you will hear bitch and ho. But if you listen to rap in general, when a women is being complimented in a song, they are NOT reffered to as a bitch or ho. So no it’s not degrading all women, just the ones with no goal in life but to stick out their hand when another person makes some money.
Do your research…
Word.
lol im just sayin diva, it’s way more damage beiing done when young people can’t depend on their elders because they are almost more against us than the racists!
im not even a political fanatic type of dude but it gets tiring when people just constantly hatin’ on other people.
blackmistressdiva u my people!
I’m an 80’s baby (David Banner, incidentally, is not). And although I’m desensitized to it in music and when I hear it in casual conversation, that doesn’t mean I don’t know deep down that it’s not a word we should be using. I think a lot of “young” people, even people who use “nigga” in casual conversation, also know this deep down. It isn’t about capital, it’s about self-respect.
@Jay: “Bitch” and “ho” are used as *synonyms* for women, therefore, it is misogynistic (Also, those words are derogatory, they’re slurs b/c they tie vice to femaleness, just as “nigger” ties being ignorant, stupid, or lazy to blackness). And who the hell are these fools to condemn trashy women when they’re no better, considering that birds of a feather flock together? Their moral hypocrisy is pathetic.
if bitch and ho are used as synonyms for women, how come songs or certain lyrics that are praising a woman don’t ever have those words in them?
But i feel u on moral hypocrisy, but that is present in society in general, not just hip-hop.
