Especially Backstage at the Golden Globes

With heavy doses of seriousness and solemnity, Isaiah Washington warns us of the power of words (like ones that being with f and end with t…and have a-g-g-o in the middle) in this GLAAD public service announcement. Unfortunately, in the eyes of the brass at ABC, Washington may have taken a bit too long to come to this conclusion gay-friendly conclusion. Too little too late?

If the goal is to change things, firing things won’t do it. If the goal is to punish, use an example, etc., then he should be fired. There’s no point extending this story. Fire him or don’t.

maybe the wait was to see how the castmates could/would handle working with him and if it was feasible to keep him on as far as the team dynamic. or maybe the wait was just to draw attention; like all controversies, it certainly kept people talking. the latest word is that he’s out, right?

He should have used his power to keep his mouth shut. Crazy bastard.

A large part of the problem, here, is that GLAAD is so complicit in helping resuscitate Washington’s career and public image.

I’m all for one apologizing and trying to make amends. But GLAAD is so far gone with its relationship with Hollywood.

This is just more evidence that they’d rather have a hateful star in one of their PSAs than no star at all.

Why not enlist TR Knight to make that same PSA? He’s the one who knows what hate speech really feels like.

Actually, I would be very surprised if Isaiah Washington, a middle-aged black man, didn’t have a good sense of what hate speech really felt like. All the more reason to recognize that it’s wrong before you get caught doing it. Twice.

Touche, my editor ;)

But anti-gay hate speech, which is the focus of this PSA? Isaiah isn’t an appropriate choice. He’s not in this to say sorry; he’s in this to get his career back on track.
