If you’re wondering who those two gentleman are on stage with Kanye West and Katt Williams at the BET Awards, they are Carwin Jones and Bryant Purvis. Still don’t know? They are a third of the infamous Jena Six. It appears they were flown to Atlanta and given some new clothes and the honor of presenting an award. I’m not sure how I feel about the move to make celebrities out of these kids, who should probably be somewhere doing school work or attending to their world-famous legal troubles. This all seems inappropriately celebratory. These kids don’t deserve “special” racist treatment from their local DA or their peers. But I’m not sure if they deserve this kind of special treatment either.

More pics from the show, which airs Wednesday at 8 p.m., after the jump.

Williams looking like some body’s child dressed up like a man. He’s smaller than the teenage boys. Haha!

Ciara is looking a little Bey Bey-ish!

Lauren London has finally disappointed me. I guess it was bound to happen. Long night, hon?

Keisha Cole is keeping her ghetto cred straight, I see.

Melyssa Ford’s body is banging.

Im glad that the Jena 6 boys are out and about but, Im on the fence as well about they way BET represened them. Im hoping Mtv-Black had an entire segment about the timeline and the seriousness of the Jena controversy, becuase as much as its being publicized its not publicized enough. We will see, maybe BET will surprise me.

I think the Jena 6 boys should have been wearing suits and looking like angels. They should look humbled by the fact that they probably won’t be going to prison for the rest of their lives. This doesn’t sit well with me. Did they know how much serious trouble they were, and still are in???

Being celebrated/rewarded for ganging up 6 to 1 on one white boy?!? As I’ve commented many times, hip hop/rap SUCKS! The values it imparts are right on par with this kind of shit. Ups for violence, down on our people, hatred for our women and girls. And BIG ups for conflict diamonds and obscene materialism. Sad sad sad. The beats aren’t worth this. Our people are way better than this. It’s up to the youths to try try try to make this their message, as opposed to the opposite.

That right there is the parents fault, more then likely they got some type of monetary payment for the appearance if not, the gift bags given out are worth more then anything they ever truly gotten in their lives. Their communtiy is poor so all the clothing and gifts they’re receiving is helping the parents make bad decisions. Yes they shouldve been in suits, the parents need to step up and be mature abotu this whole ordeal. Just becuase Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Mos def and others came to march (which was great) doesnt mean your free and out of the fire. Once They are finished loopholing the justice system with Mycheal Bell the next boy in line is next. Their parents need to open their eyes becuase you cannot expect a 15 or 16 boy to understand the levity behind that apperance, if thats all they did was present. They are just giving the DA and the family of the white boy beatdown more levarage in a court system in Jena that wants their heads. This looks like the Jena 6 really dont care. Becuase what two do reflects all six.

Are the 2 Jenas saggin? I guess no one taught them that saggin is “niggas” spelled backwards. I have to follow-up as to whether or not Atlanta passed the “no saggin” ordinance.

The roots of hip-hop are grounded in the opposite of everything you mentioned. But I do agree, the values of commercial rap - which is really what it is we should be attacking, not hip-hop a cultural endevaour that was formed by COMMUNITY and FOR COMMUNITY - do suck and are not only hurting black people who subscribe to them but also reflecting badly on the rest of us to due the burdern of representation.

I think this is bad taste because - correct me if I’m wrong - but the Jena 6 case is still ongoing. I mean, didn’t their friend Mychal Bell get slung back in prison over the weekend.

Also: this fuels the fire of racists and those that thought the whole Jena 6 thing was blown out of proportion anyway. Turning up to the BET awards as if they were celebrities trivalises the whole thing.

They are still criminals, even though we know their punishment was harsh and racist in terms of what their white counterparts received (ie. nothing). There is nothing to celebrate here and a BET Awards Show seems an inappropriate place to even try and start.

AT THE VERY LEAST THEY COULD HAVE WORN SUITS AND SAVED THE MEAN MUGGING FOR THEIR BATHROOM MIRRORS.

I actually appreciate the fact that they were dressed up and flown out to the awards show. They are (in their own way) young civil right activists. They represent their generation in the fight against racism. I don’t think they should’ve worn suits. That doesn’t reflect who they really are and their peers wouldn’t relate to that. I applaude the person(s) who thought this one up…

BET can kiss my a–. They try to exploit anything and everything black. I agree with those above who say that these boys should have at least been in suits or dressed a bit more modest considering what they have just been through. I believe in keeping a low profile when the world is keeping a watchful eye on you.

I’m sorry, I beg to differ. These people are not “civil rights activists”. The same way that people who go to jail 4 sellings drugs or stealing or murder are not “political prisoners” like Nelson Mandela. These are children who, while obviously were victims of racism and prejudice, nonetheless committed a CRIME.

Should they be tried as adults? No. Should they be charged with attempted murder? No. But should they be flown over to ATL, given new clothes, and put on display giving out awards as if they were some kind of heroes? HELL NO!

What Kind of message are we sending out as a people? That it’s ok to commit crimes just as long as we are victims of a racist justice system? That you’ll be rewarded for doing wrong? What about the people (like me) who have NEVER been in jail, never been accused of a crime, studied in school and stay out of trouble? There are kids out there who make straight A’s and aren’t jumping people…are they being flown by BET to Atlanta and getting to present awards?

And what on earth were the parents thinking? This is sad, and a joke. Wake up people! WE are the ones getting screwed here. This does nothing to uplift our people; it only makes us look like FOOLS!
