Banning Words Doesn't Change Minds

coveredmouth.jpg
• When will city council members across the nation realize that banning “the n-word” violates free speech, and it’s incredibly stupid and it will never work. [AHN]

• There’s racism on a college campus. The world is round. It’s November. This blog is called Stereohyped. [ST]

• Black writers only make up about 3 percent (damn) of the Writers Guild, which is currently on strike, but they are all joining their comrades in the picket lines. [LAW]

• The Toronto school board is considering opening a black-focused school next year. [Star]

• Now that Dick Parsons of Time Warner and Stan O’Neal of Merrill Lynch have retired, there are only 4 blacks left running Fortune 500 companies. Which is better than, ummm, three? []

Boys and girls tend to score better on tests and learn more when they go to same-sex schools, but I’ve never heard anything one way or the other re same-race schools? Although in this proposed school the curriculum will be afrocentric. It’s an interesting idea. I’m all for it.

Seems like it would be hard to get public funding though. However I might just be thinking like an American.

I’m from Toronto. It is difficult to get public funding for the school, not just American thinking. Hence all the meetings, many people, including the Premier are against it. I believe there is a private Black school still open in the city that has an extremely high rate of graduates who go on to university compared to public schools. I went to a weekend afrocentric school in high school and I loved it. I dont know how it is in the States but in Canada the regular curriculum is quite european centred. The only time we learned about Black History was independant study projects, and its the same for my neice now. Which is quite a shame given that Toronto is such a multicultural city.
