Quote of the Week

“I said something to Spike [Lee] one night, and he’s never been the same to me since,” he says. “He was trying to get me to play [German boxer] Max Schmeling in the Joe Louis story. If I was in it, he’d get this $100 million financing. But it’s just a secondary role. And I said to him, “I want to be Joe Louis. I want to be Muhammad Ali. If you want to work with me, let me be Joe Louis. … I think he took it the wrong way. … I don’t get any more birthday cards from him.”

He’s an Aussie. WTF does Spike expect? It’s not that Aussies are malicious racists or anything. The country has little regard for non-whites so how on earth would he see such a statement as unwise? A white American actor would not reveal such a thing because to some extent, they get that a line was crossed. Russel obviously doesn’t get it. I still like him as an actor though. I never cared for him as a person so he lost no points there.

Funny, I just took it as Russell telling Spike “I want to play leading roles only.” In a story about Joe Louis and Max Schmeling, the Joe Louis role would obviously be the starring role.

I guess you had to be there because I’m sure there was much more to the conversation.

I agree with Anovelista, I didn’t find it that offenseive. But it also depends on how it was said. Guess you’d have to have been there.

Did Spike send him birthday cards before?

I’d bet a dollar Spike never sent him a card in his life. Russell was obviouslly being SARCASTIC. I’m sure Spike took more offense that he turned him down, more than any percieved racial slight.

On a side note, Austrailia is one of the most racist countries i’ve ever been to in my life. Like seriously.

Um, is there a RIGHT way to take this statement? As a white actor what Crowe said was offensive period. That’s why he gets no more birthday cards.
