Will Smith Developing A Hitch Sitcom / Stereohyped

Karate Kid: The Black Version is still not happening — thank God — but Will Smith is making a film with his frequent collaborator, Michael Mann, about a global media conglomerate and developing a sitcom based on Hitch. No rest for those weary, $20-million-per-picture actors.

It would be nice if he could do the same thing Selma Hayek and others did with Ugly Betty (predominantly hispanic cast) and have a predominantly black cast for the Hitch sitcom.

To JB, people shy away from that because when it’s a “black show,” some non-minorities decide it’s not for them automatically. Fresh Prince and The Cosby Show are the big exceptions to the rule. He was in Fresh Prince and the fact that a show where all the main characters are black was a mainstream success proves that it can be done. I don’t know if execs are willing to put money on that though.
