It must be such a victory when an artist, like Lupe Fiasco with his new “Dumb it Down” video, is able to make an extremely low budget video that’s also pretty effective. Can someone send this song to Bill O’Reilly along with a frosty glass of iced tea, please? He probably won’t be able to “get over it.”
Wouldn’t it be clever if this becomes the norm!

why is it that rappers who actually have something intelligent to say don’t get money for their videos?
disgraceful.
Lupe is my second favorite rapper. And the message in this song is the best. Record labels could push material like this and change the musical tastes of a generation. But, they’d rather give him play money for his video and allow Young to make his dance song with multiple bitch and ho references. It’s the record companies people!! They determine what’s hot. And Lupe addressed it in this song…and look at his video budget.
If you are at home or have earphones at work, please listen to this song. 2, 3 times. It’s a perfect parallel of the media’s portrayal of blacks. The Cosby show was the most popular tv show of all time. How many Cosby shows have we seen since then? But we get Flavor of Love, I Love NY, etc…we’ve been effectively reduced to the court jester again in 2007.
If you’re black and have something intelligent to say, we (meaning blacks and whites) don’t want to hear it. Stay in your place. How many times you think you’ll see this song on BET? The same network that turned down a Little Brother video b/c it was deemed “too intelligent.” How many times do you think it will be on MTV?
Like Jada said- “too hard for MTV, not black enough for BET…just let me be.” Sorry for the dissertation.
I loved it. I think that the simplicity of the video and the beat were brilliant. I think it was on purpose to “dumb down” everything and get to the message. Its nice to see a video without bright, ADHD inducing, colours or product placements once in a while.
Love it. Love him.
