Prince’s eccentric, diva-ish behavior is generally acceptable to me because he’s earned it, and unlike another black music icon, his eccentricity does not dip into the realm of child molestation. Even though much of his subsequent music was good too, the real reason Prince has earned his right to eccentric divadom is the Purple Rain album, which I might listen to, at least in part, about once a week.
The editors of Vanity Fair agreed with me, and named it the best soundtrack of all time on a top 50 list in their upcoming issue.
Editors of the magazine said the movie was “perhaps the best badly acted film ever,” while its soundtrack combined “funk, R&B, pop, metal, and even psychedelia into a sound that defined the ’80s.”
The Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night” placed second on the list of 50, followed by “The Harder They Come,” “Pulp Fiction,” “The Graduate,” “Superfly,” “Trainspotting,” “Saturday Night Fever,” “American Graffiti” and “The Big Chill” rounding out the top 10.
I would normally post a video from the album, but (duh!) that’s what Rewounds are for! Plus, Prince is funny about YouTube. Check back tomorrow morning.
