A recent survey found that, compared to many countries in Western Europe, immigrant Muslims assimilate relatively well. In fact, the study found that African American Muslims more unhappy with America and, along with younger Muslims, were more likely to have extremist views. Is it because, minus the post-9-11 racial profiling, African Americans have a bit more to be disillusioned about, none of which has much to do with Islam?

“Overall, the report shows that the American Muslim community is very well integrated into mainstream American society,” said Dawud Walid, executive director of the Council on American Islamic Relations, in Michigan.

The report did show some support of extremist views among Muslim youths and African-American Muslims.

“The most disillusioned segment of the Muslim community being African-Americans is not a big surprise. African-Americans have been historically disenfranchised in America and have not enjoyed the degree of economic upward mobility as immigrant Muslims.”

It makes sense that a race of people who have lived in this country for centuries are more likely to be judgmental than people who had to sacrifice God knows what to get here. We are more likely to be judgmental and also less likely to take advantage of the American dream immigrants latch onto with such passion. There are obstacles, but the dream is ours to be had as much as, if not more than, it is anyone else’s.

The double minority thing probably does it for them, but they also probably don’t have to deal with the presumption that they’re terrorists as Arab muslims do. All in all, I think they have it better than other muslims.

hmmm, i’d have to disagree that they have it better. i think while people DEFINITELY make the terrorist assumption more often about middle easterners, with black muslims people aren’t as inclined to take their religious beliefs as seriously. so i think that’s an issue that probably makes their plight harder than we realize.

i’m not saying they have it worse, just that there are unique complications for them, too.

As an African American Muslim, it is a double whammy when you meet certain people. Imagine having a totally Arab name on your resume, then showing up to the interview as a black male. They most of the time don’t know what to think. But in the end, I think Black Muslims are just more disillusioned b/c they’re black.

blkmaleperspective, honey, you’re lucky you’re getting job interviews with an Arab name on your resume. There are two Muslim women that I’m close to with unmistakeable Arab names. As brilliant as they are, they can’t even get a foot in the door. The corporate world and academia are very different.
