Kanye West’s mother, Donda West, died during cosmetic surgery at an LA hospital yesterday. She was only 58. Kanye, who had just landed in London when he heard the news, hopped back on a plane to the states to be with his family.

Their close relationship was obvious, from his references to her in songs like “Hey Mama,” to her book, Raising Kanye: Life Lessons From the Mother of a Hip-Hop Star. Since 2004, Donda West has been helping Kanye manage his career, but before that she was an English professor at Chicago State University. You can send Kanye some love via his blog. P.S. In other R.I.P. news, Norman Mailer died in NYC on Saturday.

So sad. It was from a “cosmetic procedure” according to CNN.

I wonder if it was from lipo? Lots of lipo patients have heart attacks abd die b/c they lose too much blood or their blood pressure drops too much while under.

bmd, I was thinking tummy tuck or breast reduction/lift. They have higher complication rates, though she’s at around the cut-off when a lot of better surgeons advise against them, especially if she had any medical conditions. Anesthesia + comorbidities = trouble. This is what I guessed/feared it was yesterday when I saw it as a cosmetic surgery enthusiast.

As sensitive as this boy is can you imagine what his next award speech is going to be like? He’s going to take emotional breakdown to a different level. I don’t blame him one bit.

Yeah. I found out right before Family Guy last night and simply couldn’t enjoy it as I felt so bad for Kanye.

The LA Times is saying that she was brought to Daniel Freeman hosiptal ER where she died. So the procedure wasn’t done at the hospital she died at. The article seems to hint that she didn’t die during surgery or that she had the procedure done at a place w/o emergency services. I don’t think you can have a tummy tuck outside of a hosiptal b/c of the possible compications.

Most tummy tucks are done in clinics, not hospitals. I’m not quite sure why (I’m guessing cost), but most are done in clinics, even when the patients are at increased risk. Looking at that picture of her, that’s my guess. These complications seem to happen more in the NY area. Maybe it’s that I don’t live in LA but the safety and quality seems to be better in that area. Even the experts in NY who are supposedly kings of face lifts often give that wind tunnel look. I’ve “shopped” several places and have done loads of research in the last few years. Colorado is probably best for my procedure.

That would explain why she apparently had complications in one place and had to be brought to the hospital. Cosmetic surgery is so common place now that we often forget the complications that can arise.

There are also complications that are more common in older people post-surgery. Some people can’t be weaned off of oxygen post-surgery. There are also clots, etc. My friend couldn’t be weaned off of oxygen after her breast reduction and they found out in the hospital that she had some blood clot in her lung that was probably from birth control pills. She was fine though.

This is so sad. I remember seeing him perform his song for her on Oprah. I really related to him wanting to do his best and providing for her.

Agree except for the latter part. She was an educated woman and obviously was able to provide for her son which is a refreshing change from the rags to riches tales which are equal parts sweet and horrifying. She was the chair of the English dept at a Chicago uni until 2005 when she left to manage his career. He definitely wanted to make her proud, but as far as providing for her, it’s something she didn’t need.

I feel so bad for Kanye. How terrible for him to lose his mother so suddenly, at such a young age, and from complications of an elective surgery. This goes to show just how fragile life is. Appreciate each moment, family.

tmz is stating that she had multiple procedures and was taken from her home to the hospital so whatever complications occurred didn’t occur during or immediately after surgery.

Surgeries scare the hell out of me. My mother needs new kidneys. And while I want her to get them - the idea of her going under the knife makes me very, very uneasy.

Hope she gets it. Are you or any of your family members a match?

I am getting work done on my thighs and flanks. I have a diet and exercise resistant thick and solid layer of blubber that’s been there since I was 12. If you do your homework and find the right doctor, it can be a great experience. I had eye surgery last year. The person I went to teaches other doctors. When I check on Google Scholar, I find a bunch of his articles. He did not give me false hope like many of the other people I saw. He basically said that I was basically blind so the chances of me having 20/20 vision with one procedure was slim to none. I’m having a revision and he refuses to touch me again until my dry eye is completely clear. If I went and got the blade lasik, the flap may not heal because of my eye anatomy, something that was brushed aside by others. Same goes for plastic surgery which is far more invasive (though vision is #1). This is the guy I’m thinking of going to (http://www.denverfaceandbody.com/slideshows/LipoSelection-by-VASER/lipo-slideshow9.htm ) but still doing research and weighing pros/cons of having surgery across the country.

You ARE serious about it, huh? The only elective surgery I want done I saw done on Tyra. It’s basically having restalin injected into the balls of my feet. Years of wearing stilettos have ruined my feet. The balls of my feet become inflamed after about an hour in heels now b/c I’ve worn down the fatty part of that area of my feet. There’s no more cushion there now, but the restalin would change that. $1000 per visit. 4 visits a year. Not too bad. I’ve only found one Dr. in the Bay Area that does the procedure.

bmd, try some Insolias (they sell em online and at CVS) first. Injectables and laser procedures don’t count as “surgery” in my book. I have some deep frown lines (20+ years of squinting) so I’d get that but I’m considering bangs first. They’re kind of annoying. I had a baaaaad laser hair removal experience - big burns. I turned into a werewolf after I got off of the Pill. It’s not a cute look and electrolysis is unbearable. I don’t have much of a choice in the matter so I’ll have to try it again with a dermatologist.

I’m too vain for insoles. I don’t want ppl thinking I need them. Which is why I suffer through wearing heels now instead of breaking down and wearing flats. I also like to be tall b/c I’m only a paltry 5′6. :-(
