TV Land and Entertainment Weekly named Oprah Winfrey third (third? Bill Cosby better be first or second) on their list of the 100 greatest television icons of all time. Her good friend Maya Angelou has a little bit to say about the honor, and doesn’t sugarcoat Ms. Winfrey’s material gains, which allow her to give more to others, in case you were wondering. The show airs tomorrow at 8pm on TV Land.

Lucille Ball or Shirley Temple probably. I’m guessing #1 is someone from a while back. Bill is probably top 10 but not higher than Oprah

I don’t think someone with a talk show should be labeled a “TV icon” I mean, how can an icon be someone who is watched by stay at home moms and ppl who don’t have jobs?

The Cos should rank high.

Carrol O’Connor (Archie Bunker), also stared int he Heat of the Night
Sherman Hemsley (George Jefferson)
Mary Tyler Moore

There are many, many more I’d put over Oprah.

In terms of # of viewers, I’d still put Oprah above all of them. I don’t have a job and I don’t watch Oprah. TV goes on at 7:30 p.m. for Jeopardy. Maybe it’s Merv Griffin or Johnny Carson.

Merv is a big one on both sides of the camera. And don’t forget the news guys…Morrow, Cronkite, etc.

The word icon is totally subjective. I don’t care how many ppl watch a show. The Archie Bunker and George Jefferson characters did a lot for the race discord in this country and Mary Tyler Moore did similar for women. They all set up the path that Oprah walks on.

I never watched MTM, but I should rent it on DVD if they have it. Always heard good things. I do agree with you on All in the Family and The Jefferson’s were important though I’m judging from what I’m told. I’m 23 though (which is almost 25 which is almost old. enter 1/4 life crisis). If it weren’t for Jeopardy, probably wouldn’t know who Merv Griffin is. MY TV icons are Oprah, Bill Cosby, etc because I’ve actually seen their shows

I’ve watched a lot of old and older TV. Spent a lot of time with my Granny and great-grandmother growing up. My Granny loves westerns so I had to sit through a billion eps of The Rifleman when I lived her briefly as a child. LOL. I guess that’s where I get my love for old TV and movies from.
