Nineteen black men associated with an Muslim bakery in Oakland were arrested this morning in connection with several murders, robberies and kidnappings. Incidentally, Chauncey Bailey, the newspaper editor killed yesterday, was investigating the “group.”
The group has had a violent history. The founder — Yusuf Bey — fought accusations that he had raped or molested several girls who worked at Your Black Muslim Bakery between 1976 and 1995. When he died in 2003, he was awaiting trial on charges he sexually abused a girl who was 13 when she began working at the bakery.
A violent succession battle ensued. Antar Bey, the son and Yusuf’s designated heir, was gunned down as he talked on his cell phone at an Union 76 gas station in Oakland in October 2005. That slaying still remains under investigation.
The group gained further attention in Nov. 2005 when several members were charged and pleaded no contest to trashing liquor cases at local convenience stores.
Police haven’t said whether or not they believe the men were responsible for Chauncey Bailey’s killing, but it certainly doesn’t sound far-fetched.

This is a shame. I’m SOOOO tired of hearing about black women being sexually abused and it’s all swept under the rug. At least with all the black on black murders, people at least don’t stick their heads in the sand.
Muslim people are no PR experts.
That’s not meant to be Islamaphobic at all. Just look around. When your people are being portrayed poorly 100% of the time, it certainly doesn’t help the situation to give people like Lou Dobbs (and the probably 50, 60% of Americans who agree with him wholeheartedly) reasons to validate their prejudice.
What is it with the Nation and other black muslim sects targeting young girls though? That has been an issue with black muslims for a long time, hasn’t it? I don’t want to speak on some wrong shit so somebeody correct me if I’m wrong.
No disrespect to women or other commenters, but I think the (probable) assassination of a journalist in broad daylight is much more appalling than the abuse part. Don’t get me wrong: they’re both terrible and disgusting. It just surprises me than no one’s expressed dismay over the murder yet.
In the meantime, the Catholic Church should have a sit-down with the Nation about sexual abuse.
I doubt the Catholic church can relate to the abuse of young black girls. R Kelly may be a better authority on the subject.
BTW…I am shocked and disgusted by this madness. It’s sad that this happened to any human being, but for it to be another Black person and there to be so many high profile suspects, it just scary.
PLo - I have expressed shock over the murder! I do not want to believe that this sect (or any religious goup) of black muslims had anything to do with it. I mean, ppl laugh at these brothas b/c some of them convert in prison or some of them have shady backgrounds, but for the most part the Nation keeps them out of trouble so I don’t have any problem with them - if if they do have some questionable views on race. And, I also don’t want this man’s death to go down as just another ni**a killed! I am so frustrated right now.
I meant to say EVEN if they do have some questionable views on race

As far as religious authorities and sexual abuse goes, pretty much ALL denominations need to have a sit down about the topic. I don’t think these people were clergy so there’s a difference, but as far as clergy and abuse goes, it definitely exists in all major religious groups. Catholics just have a lot more of it for obvious reasons.
It is terrible that a man got murdered. No one’s saying it’s not terrible or serious, BUT it did make national headlines. I’ve seen it on CNN AND MSNBC today. There are PLENTY of little girls who are sexually abused and we hear about maybe 20 or so each year, all generally pretty rich white girls. If you’re poor, not pretty by Nancy Grace’s standards, black, Asian, latino, male, etc., it MIGHT get into the local paper for a minute before people stop caring. A man got killed. People care as they should. Lots of black girls were sexually abused. No one cares as long as it isn’t a black celebrity who abused them… and even then, the victims are a side note or part of some joke.

[…] The vast majority of these homicides are black-on-black, and they happen every single day, although Oakland’s recent high profile case has recently (and briefly) brought the issue to the national news. […]
