I can think of $millions$ of reasons why it’s good to be Will Smith, Barack Obama, Tiger Woods*, and Denzel Washington. Low on the list is that they have all graced the cover of Men’s Vogue in 2007. While I’m sure it’s sort of “whatever” to them, it’s kind of a big deal in the fashion mag industry, where covers featuring black celebs are few and far between. Take Men’s Vogue’s female predecessor, Vogue, for instance: Jennifer Hudson’s March cover was only the third in the magazine’s history to feature a black female celebrity. And there was not a single black model in the October issue’s fashion spread. Incidentally, the same went for Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Glamour and Cosmopolitan.

I suppose it’s not entirely accurate to say that black people aren’t “en Vogue.” Just those unfashionable black women. [Portfolio]

I didn’t realize that was him. It must have been a bad photo that was subsequently photoshopped. Men’s Vogue (which is 2-3 yrs old) has had more black folk on the cover than Vogue. That is something. Even if you could 1/4 for Tiger. It’s a damn mess and precisely why I stopped my $10/year subscription to Vogue.

That photo of Will is not flattering.

And wasn’t that cover with Jennifer Hudson the one where she had her mouth open all wide as if she was at a backyard bar-b-que laughing at Pookie and them’s jokes? If so, I HATED that photo too.

Vogue and Men’s Vogue have different editors. The editor of Men’s Vogue apparently doesn’t think black people are ugly. I’m sure that there are probably more black women in Men’s Vogue than there are in Vogue.

LMAO at JHud pic. Yes, she had her mouth open, but not that wide.

He’s talking about his “power marriage” again?

Seems like he and Jada err on the side of oversharing in reaction to the persistent rumors about them.

I think they are using “power marriage” in the financially profitable sense. Those two are doing big things and note how they’re doing it without the coon ish.

I think it’s a decent picture. And yes it is always increasingly sad to be made aware of how these mags and Hollywood in general think very lowly of the attractiveness of black men and and especially women. I see “past” stars like Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ashlee Simpson gracing new covers every week, but Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Meghan Good….in your dreams. I am always fascinated by the in your face examples of prejudice and ignorance.
